This month's featured Member is The Outlook

Publisher an editor of the newspaper that serves the MFL Mar Mac Community, Gordon Tustin and his wife, Shirley, purchased the paper October 1, 2005 and since then their son, Scott, advertising manager, and his wife, Jessica, who works in the office and graphic department, have joined them in operating the paper.  Shirley Tustin, a retired teacher, also pitches in with proof-reading.

“I like [to cover] people doing things and to do good and informative stories about the area,” says Gordon Tustin, who has an extensive background in the newspaper business.  A background that started when he had a paper route in the 6^th grade, and the following years when he held the position of a ‘printer’s devil,’ which meant he ran press, did the linotype, set type and other things.

“Printing is fun for me,” Tustin states and this has contributed to his 40 years in the business.  In 1958, he worked at the county print shop at Fort Hays State College in Kansas and when he graduated from college two later, he worked for the Kansas Colby Free-Press Tribune as a reporter.  He had worked at newspapers in Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska then moved back to Colby in 1966 where he met and married Shirley the following year.

Why did he decide to move to this part of this state? “Because we wanted to be nearer to the grandchildren,” Tustin says. His daughter, who lives in Monticello, looked over the area for them and told them about the many advantages it had to offer, so they packed up and came to Monona after finding out that the Outlook was for sale.

Tustin says he enjoys seeing Marquette and McGregor and other area communities ‘doing things,’ and gives credit to the community members for their initiative.

The Monona Outlook is published weekly and also offers other printing services, such as a cook-books, flyers & brochures.
