Iowa Archeology Month Hike at Effigy Mounds National Monument
There will be special events during October, Iowa Archeology Month, at Effigy Mounds National Monument. On Saturday, October 4, a ranger-guided special hike through the ancient mounds of Sny Magill will start at the visitor center at 2:00 p.m. Participants will caravan down to the site, 11 miles south. Sny Magill has one of the foremost mound groups in the Midwest, with 107 identified conical, linear, compound and effigy mounds in an eight-acre area. In case of inclement weather or flooding at the site, there will be an alternative talk in the visitor center auditorium. The visitor center is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. located 3 miles north of Marquette, Iowa, and 22 miles south of Waukon, Iowa, on Highway 76. Effigy Mounds National Monument preserves prehistoric American Indian mounds including “effigies” or mounds in the shape of animals. For more information, call 563-873-3491 ext. 202.
